Variable Effect Hijinks

Postby Titanium Man on Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:47 pm

So I turned to Variable Effect to represent some particular abilities, but I'm having a hard time pontificating them correctly. Let me explain what they are and how I set up the power. (I'm using an optional house rule for dice costs, so thatr's why HD are x3 and WD are x4.)

The first one, named Harmony, has the ability to instantly evolve an adaptation to any external stimuli that the character perceives as harmful or4 disadvantgeous. For example, if she's punched in the face, she automatically forms bone armor around her skull. If she's trying to lift a car but can't, her body instantly evolves stronger muscles. I want this to be able to affect her stats and skills, but I'm not sure I did it correctly.
[Hyper Evolution [A D U] 9d+1wd
(15 per d, 30 per ed, 45 per hd, 60 per wd)
-Attacks Extras: Variable Effect (Adaptation) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
-Defends Extras: Variable Effect (Adaptation) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
-Useful Extras: Variable Effect (Adaptation) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
>This power can only be activated if Harmony suffers some kind of negative feedback from an attack or a condition. It has to be used to make a power that directly counteracts the extermal stimuli. For example, if Harmony is hit by a striking attack, the dice must be used to generate armor of some kind.]

The second has the ability to summon a spiritual representation of his life force. (AKA, a Stand from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, if you've ever read that.) This spirit can move and fight for the character, and it also gives the character the ability to connect any two points with a spectral band and pull them together/push them apart. I didn't use the Minion power because Stands are representations of their users and tend to be very versatile.
[Eyes On Me [A D U] 1d+1hd+1wd
(21 per d, 42 per ed, 63 per hd, 84 per wd)
-Attacks Extras: Variable Effect (Physical Actions) +2, Variable Effect (Two-Point Connection) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
-Defends Extras: Variable Effect (Physical Actions) +2, Variable Effect (Two-Point Connection) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
-Useful Extras: Variable Effect (Physical Actions) +2, Variable Effect (Two-Point Connection) +2, Duration +2, If/Then -1
EFFECT: Eyes On Me, while the manifestation of this character's life essence, can perform many actions that a human can. Its main ability is the ability to connect two points to each other and extend or withdraw that link.
>IF this character is able to maintain his breath, THEN he is able to use this power.]

Any help would be appreciated.

Since you have Variable Effect costing only +2, I think you are using a long out-of-date version of the Wild Talents Essential Edition rulebook, from its very small first print run. We revised Variable Effect and several other things after that and replaced the PDFs for customers. If that's the case, send an email to shane.ivey@gmail.com and I'll see about getting the updated PDF to you.

Otherwise they look pretty straightforward. The only thing I'd highlight is that Harmony's power as written requires her to declare and activate it after she suffers some unpleasant condition. So it doesn't happen instantaneously -- she has to activate it proactively the next round. If you want it to happen automatically you ought to apply some other extras.

Specifically you should add Permanent +4 and An If/Then Trigger condition like (unsuited to circumstance).
