Will Contest/Defensive Use of Talent vs. Talent

Postby Rhino on Thu May 17, 2007 9:38 am

I am having trouble getting my head around when a use of a Talent against another Talent invokes a Will Contest. If I heave a brick using my Hyperbody Talent and Throw Skill it is not supposed to invoke a Will contest. If I try to use my Hybercoordination Talent to throw a grenade it will invoke a Will Contest. I cannot see a distinction between the two, either logically or game balance wise.

Likewise, in the rules under defensive use of Talents vs. attacking Talents it states that some always on defensive powers can be used instead of the normal Will contest. It mentions Heavy Armor and Immunity. In the write up on Immunity it specifically states that it cannot be used to defend against another Talent attack and that a Will Contest is used instead. Which is correct? What other defensive Talents can be used against attacking Talents?

If I'm throwing a brick or a car at someone it is not hyperstrength that helps me hit the person. Hyperstrength only helps me do more damaged if I do hit. Therefore, there is no contest.
But you do bring up a good case that is a fine line. If you don't like the rule, then change it.

As to the defensive question. "Some" is the key word. SOME always on powers can be used. Immunity can sometimes be used but not always. Say you have two talents: one has a flamethrower and he can enhance the flames to make creatures like dragons and stuff. The other can shoot flames out of his hands and buys it as harm.
Someone with immunity may not be hurt by the first talent because it is after all just flames. But the second talents flames are actually a harm power that manifests as flames. So they aren't really flames in a true sense.
That's one way to read it.

I gues the problem I have is that a throwing attack is based on body+throw, so hyperbody will add its dice to the pool to hit. I can change the rule, but I was wondering what everybody else was doing.

Same with the question regarding defensive talents vs. offensive talents? I was wondering which defensive talents are people allowing to defend against talent attacks.

Thanks for the reply.

First look to the spirit of the rules. If you're GMing and a thrown grenade doesn't seem a direct enough use of a Talent to warrant a Will contest, then leave out the Will contest and never mind if the book says it gets one.
